Google spent $ 100 million to protect YouTube

Google’s chief financial officer Patrick Pichette made a curious statement during a company selector meeting that discussed Google’s profit in the second quarter of this year: the corporation “invested” $ 100 million in protecting YouTube from Viacom’s claims. The latter estimated its damage at $ 1 billion.

In 2007, Viacom filed a lawsuit against Google due to the unauthorized downloading of 160,000 clips on YouTube (Google bought video service in 2006). Since then, the sparring does not stop - that in the courtroom, that outside. Google claimed that this issue falls under the protection of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

Last month, a court ruled in favor of Google, thus ending the altercations . But, we have to admit, the victory was not cheap. $ 100 million - I wonder how many lawyers worked in this case?

On the other hand, at the same meeting, the corporation’s revenue for the second quarter was announced - it amounted to $ 6.8 billion, which is 24% more than during the same period last year. All in all, the company’s accounts are worth $ 30 billion.
