Activists of the open-iron movement (Open Source Hardware, OSHW) adopted a basic document in the third edition.
The definition of OSHW 0.3 is based on the
Open Source Definition model created by Bruce Perens and the Debian developers within the Debian Free Software Guidelines.
Video and documentation of the meeting, in which the document was discussed, posted
here . All interested persons are invited to further
discussion of the formulations.
According to some
experts , the wording in the definition of OSHW needs to be slightly mitigated in order to eliminate contradictions with existing iron producers, who have invested billions of dollars in building their production facilities. This is in contrast to the definition of software OSS, where there is no such huge investment, and therefore radical wording can be justified.
In the world of open iron, there are no whole layers of necessary microcircuits. For example, there is not a single fully open WiFi chipset. Even the well-known rt73 chipset with open drivers uses closed firmware. It is quite difficult to demand from the manufacturer 100% openness of the software, because even in the open chipset there can be pieces of a proprietary microcode (for example, recorded in ROM).
')
Thus, the current definition of OSHW theoretically eliminates the possibility of creating an open iron with the actual functionality (at least WiFi or cellular)
It was also decided to hold the first ever
OSHW summit to be held on September 23, 2010 in New York.
