China has stopped funding the Green Dam web filter
The developers of the Chinese Internet filter Green Dam have not received state funding for a year. As a result, the development was discontinued, and the offices of the companies that worked on the project are closed.
The development of Green Dam ("Green Curtain"), which has already been written on Habré, was launched in 2008 with public money. Beijing Dazheng Human Language Technology Academy and Zhengshou Jinhui received a grant of 41.7 million yuan ($ 6.16 million).
According to the plan of the Chinese government, Green Dam was to be installed on all personal computers supplied to the domestic market. Green Dam was positioned as a filter against pornography, but human rights organizations are confident that the project is actually aimed at strengthening Internet censorship and fighting opposition resources.
