A few years ago, I purchased the Dell Latitude D830. In general, a very good machine, with a considerable number of advantages (the main one is an excellent matte 15.4 "screen 1680 × 1050), but ... almost completely modest performance of his video system was embarrassing almost from the moment of purchase. However, since it was not bought for games, and for work - I didn’t bother much on this topic, especially since the video there is on a rather exotic nVidia Quadro NVS140M (geForce 8400M version, sharpened under CAD) - there was no reliable information about how it should behave, nVidia drivers and chip specifics. You can't play ry - well, okay, I didn't really want to.
Recently it has become much worse. The video was terribly slow when viewed in full screen, and the cooling fan almost constantly worked. GPU-Z showed that the frequencies of the processor, shader units and memory
under any load are 169/337/100 MHz (from the standard 400/800/400) and the video chip temperature was 75 ° C in idle and 85 ° C under load. Temperature indicators, to be honest, did
not shock me, because in the bins there is a desktop nVidia 8400GS with passive cooling - for her this is quite a normal mode, throttling is activated there only at 125 ° C. But here are the frequencies ...
He took a screwdriver in his hands.
Yes, yes, those who are in the subject, probably already guessed
what I found in a business class laptop. :)

Perfectly clean video chip. No signs of thermal paste. And why?

Do not remove the protective sticker. The inscription on the piece of paper - Laird technologies (apparently, the manufacturer of thermal paste). To say that I was surprised - to say nothing. Thank you, "good" Chinese. For three whole years,
like a sucker, I used a “warmed” video card that worked 4 times slower than it was supposed to.
He tore off the sticker, cleared the hardened thermal paste from the processor and video chip radiators, applied a thin layer of Alsil-3 to the chips and assembled it. Result: 55 ° C in idle, 65 ° C under load. Video flies, Aero flies, if you wish, you can even play Left Left 4 Dead (by lowering the quality, of course).
Moral of the story? If the technique behaves strangely - we are looking for the cause, without discarding the most incredible options. And regardless of the brand.
