It is time to distract from talking about the inner life of ABBYY and talk about those of our products that, by coincidence, may not be familiar to the users. Today we will talk about one rather unusual program of our very (well, or one of the most) promising product areas. So, we present to your attention
FotoTranslate (
currently only for Nokia smartphones) from our āmobileā department.
In this program, we have combined optical recognition technology (known worldwide by FineReader) and modern Lingvo dictionaries, many of which are licensed from well-known authors and publishers, for example, Oxford and Compact Verlag. FotoTranslate allows you to photograph text in a foreign language and immediately receive its translation on the phone screen.
How it works?
')
Yes, very simple. You see an unfamiliar foreign word or text (a signboard, a menu, a newspaper, an ad - anything you like) - take pictures with a phone - read a translation.
After receiving a photo of the text, the program recognizes it, finds the meanings of each word in the dictionary and displays it (word for word). To move to the next word, just move the cursor to it. And all this - without an Internet connection. We all know the prices for GPRS in roaming and are well aware that if the transfer was carried out on a server, then reading the menu would cost you many times more expensive than dinner in some cozy European restaurant.

There are some additional options. For example, automatic word correction. If the word is recognized, but there are ambiguities in recognition (the word is not fully photographed), then the user is offered options for words with a translation to choose from.
FotoTranslate is currently translating from five major European languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish into Russian. There are versions for the reverse translation - from Russian to the specified foreign ones. The program now works on Nokia phones with autofocus (SymbianOS S60 3rd Edition and 5th Edition (v9.1 / 9.2 / 9.3 / 9.4)) and a camera of at least 2 megapixels. A full list of supported devices is posted
here .
What we will please you in the near future? IPhone version coming soon. In addition, in the foreseeable future, FotoTranslate will support even more languages.
