On June 30, the AnandTech website published the most complete test results of the iPhone 4 antenna (they found a half-hacker way to find out the true dB value). This review remains the most complete and reliable so far, which has already been recognized by various independent experts who came up with similar results during their own tests. Since Apple refuses to correct the problem with poor signal reception, this information is required for reading by anyone who still decides to buy this product. We publish the key facts.

Neither the diagram below shows that the signal reception indicators of the iPhone were programmed extremely optimistically (they promised to fix this with a software update). The difference between the four and five “sticks” is extremely large, so in almost all situations the phone shows five “sticks”, and in case of signal deterioration the indicator decreases sharply



At the same time, the -113 dB level corresponds to the border at which the phone still supports voice communication. If the signal drops below, the connection is broken. Incidentally, in this respect, the iPhone 4 antenna really got better, because the iPhone 3GS could not support the connection at such a low signal level.

However, due to the overly optimistic design of the indicator, if it is “wrong” to take the phone, the signal level can instantly fall from five “sticks” to zero - this, in particular, caused the current scandal. As we have already said, the problem with the indicator will be corrected by a software update, so from five “sticks” the connection will not break, but only from three or four.

On the other hand, the quality of the iPhone 4 antenna, judging by the test results, does not hold water. The table below shows the weakening of the signal while holding the phone in different positions: squeezing tightly in your hand, holding normally, in the palm of your hand and inside the case.
