For the HP ProLiant G7, as well as the servers of the standard architecture of other vendors, this year the standard was the use of six-gigabit Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and junior-class disk arrays are gradually moving to this serial interface.

Not so long ago, we talked about the HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 MSA entry-level disk array with an 8-gigabit Fiber Channel interface (as an option, the array comes with an iSCSI port,
see here ), and soon after the announcement of this model, HP introduced a modification to the market with SAS 6 Gb / s ports.
')
Unlike the first modification designed to build SAN storage networks based on Fiber Channel and iSCSI technology, the HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 SAS array is designed to connect to servers directly (Direct Attached Storage, DAS) or through an SAS switch and is equipped with one or two four-port SAS controllers. Note that this product is one of the first in the industry of storage systems to have a RAID array supporting the second generation of SAS both at the backplane level and hard drives themselves, which provides six-gigabit data transfer rates from disks to servers.
The main areas of application of this array are, first of all, the construction of fault-tolerant clusters from servers (there can be up to four nodes in a cluster) and the organization of a common data storage for servers in small companies where there is no SAN. A dual-unit base module (head) intervenes twelve full-size or twenty-four 2.5-inch hard drives, and by connecting SAS seven external shelves (enclosure) to the HP StorageWorks D2600 / D2700, the array configuration expands to 149 hard drives of a reduced form factor or up to 96 full-size hard drives .
In the array, you can use both SAS and SATA disks, as well as 500 GB SAS Midline (MDL) disks — two-port single and double terabyte disks of 7200 revolutions / min, connected through SAS, which have a cost per gigabyte more than than ordinary SATA, but less than SAS. The HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 SAS comes standard with a software license to take snapshots of snapshots data and copy Volume Copy volumes.
