Approved 100 and 128 gigabyte BDXL optical disc specifications

The Blu-ray Disc Association - a group of companies responsible for developing standards, promoting and developing Blu-ray discs - has announced the approval of final specifications for BDXL format discs (Blu-ray Disc eXtra Large). Now manufacturers of disks and equipment can contact this organization to obtain licenses and technical documentation to enable the production of these disks.

Focused primarily on commercial segments, BDXL is offered in three versions: three-layer rewritable 100 GB, three-layer for one-time recording 100 GB and four-layer for one-time recording 128 GB.

Alas, to work with the new format will need new optical drives, but they will provide backward compatibility with Blu-ray.
