BBC develops Internet television protocol standard
The BBC received permission for the Canvas project - “a partnership between the BBC, ITV, BT, Five, Channel 4, and TalkTalk to develop a standard for the so-called Internet Television Protocol. ” Permission was obtained with some interesting requirements: “The Canvas project should always remain free to broadcast on air, but users may be charged for additional services provided by third parties, such as video-on-demand services, as well as subscription fees.” Access to the Canvas project should not be “shipped with other services”.
In addition, a preliminary draft of the technical specifications of the project must be published within 20 working days so that broadcasters and television equipment manufacturers can adopt new standards. It is noteworthy that "other broadcasters and content providers must also have access to the platform."
