Compromising under the protection of the authorities
The Icelandic parliament approved a bill according to which a “shelter” will be created for resources that publish compromising information and various secret information on the Internet.
The first site to use the new Icelandic rules will be Wikileaks, specializing in the publication of political and corporate compromising. Wikileaks has been negotiating with the Icelandic authorities since 2009.
The Icelandic bill is the result of an initiative called the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative, which was founded by John Perry Barlow. The goal of this project is to “find ways to strengthen freedom of expression and freedom of information in Iceland, as well as provide reliable protection for information sources and their informants”. From myself I would add: given that against the Wikileaks there were, at one time, the American and Australian authorities, then the need for this kind of law, in my opinion, is indisputable.
