OpenSUSE 11.3 RC1

Being a user of this distribution and a restless tester of the most new and unstable, I decided to download OpenSUSE 11.3 RC1 and share my impressions of the first release candidate (stable release will be released July 15).

The first thing that catches your eye is a new look. In my opinion, the installer and the grub menu looked more pleasant, but I didn’t like the screen saver on the desktop. But as they say, tastes do not argue.

After installation (the process itself remained exactly the same), I was pleased with the speed of the system boot. Opensuse began to load much faster.

Although the grub 2 loader is included in the list of packages, grub 1 is still used by default.

From the base delivery, the system works quite stably (I use sneakers), nothing has ever fallen, everything was established without problems. The only glitch seen is that postfix does not work, the service does not start, but for me personally this is not critical.

But there are also negative moments (though it’s most likely that the system is not to blame, but kde). For example, after upgrading to kde 4.5 beta2, the first launch of new sneakers threw me into the console and the system booted only after the startx command. Also, the system began to hang often (without any errors, it just stops), most likely the reason for this is kwin.

In general, I liked the system, there is progress and I hope that by the release of the stable version all the most annoying bugs will be fixed (including kde).
