Brazilian scientists have
developed OurGrid open source distributed computing system, which operates on the principles of P2P networks, which allows network users to both provide their computing power to other participants and use them for their own purposes.
OurGrid was developed jointly by
HP Labs and the
Federal Institute of Campina Grande (Brazil). Although still the majority of network members are Brazilians, OurGrid is becoming more common abroad, where users also began to download client software and connect to the network.
OurGrid users do not pay anything, because the system includes a mechanism for distributed resources, whose work is built on the mutual assistance of users. That is, in essence, this is the same P2P network, like BitTorrent, where everyone shares their data and can download others.
The full version of OurGrid client exists only for Linux. Although there is a Windows client that can participate in calculations if there is a Linux client in the domain. As in other P2P networks, OurGrid users not only help someone, but also benefit themselves, which makes the system more flexible than the same
BOINC - Berkeley University platform for organizing distributed computing using voluntarily provided computing resources.

HP believes that OurGrid could well be used for commercial purposes. Thus, the power of HP's distributed computing system has already been tested as a commercial service for rendering animated films.
