MTS and the Moscow Metro presented a new way to pay for the subway using a mobile phone

The MTS operator (Mobile TeleSystems OJSC, the largest cellular operator in the Russian Federation by the number of subscribers) intends to launch a new method of payment for travel in the Moscow metro in the fourth quarter of 2010 - subscribers can go to the subway by attaching their mobile phone to the turnstile reader, company message.

The project is being implemented jointly with the Moscow Metro State Unitary Enterprise based on NFC technology (Near Field Communication, short-range wireless communication technology). The MTS representatives demonstrated a ready-to-use technological solution for payment of travel in the metro on Friday at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum.

The new solution suggests the possibility of buying an electronic ticket to enter the Moscow subway through the transfer of funds from the subscriber’s mobile account. The e-ticket is loaded into the phone’s memory and allows you to use the phone instead of a payment card.

"On the territory of the metro stations, special points will begin to work, where MTS subscribers will be able to purchase an internal antenna for their mobile phone and set up the device to receive the possibility of paying for the trip," the press release said.

Ways of fare payment in the metro using NFC technology will be determined by the time the solution is launched into commercial operation. The integrator of the project is the Express-Card company.

As the representative of Beeline Anna Aybasheva told RIA Novosti, the operator is also interested in implementing solutions based on NFC technology. “Now we are developing the possibility of launching several projects on this technology,” she said, without specifying in which areas the operator would apply this technology.
