Everything new is well forgotten old

Wandering through the internet (I don’t remember what I was looking for), I came across Sun Self . Project 1995 (!!!), now hopelessly abandoned. However, it has already implemented a bunch of features that programmers dream about (visual programming, for example). Under the link you can watch a movie to have an idea about the system.
The question is: what did programmers do for 12 years?
