Amazon has announced the
AWS Import / Export service. According to them, using mail services and downloading data from and to the final physical device to bypass the Internet in some cases turns out to be really faster.

The source of the problem is that, even though they are American, the correct Internet speeds, it takes too long to load very large amounts of data on S3 (much more data amounts to read as starting from 1TB).
Amazon offers its users to send data to them by sending a physical device to which they can do Import / Export data from S3 using the API and Job mechanism.
Requirements for devices cover almost the whole range of them (USB, eSATA, 3.5 and 2.5-inch SATA devices, file system: ntfs, ext2, ext3, fat32). In addition, non-standard devices can be attached adapter.
')
Amazon led the table, which indicates when it makes sense to use the new service.
Internet connection speed | Minimum theoretical number of days to transfer 1TB of data on 80% of network usage | When to use AWS Import / Export? |
T1 (1.544Mbps) | 82 days | 100GB and more |
10Mbps | 13 days | 600GB and more |
T3 (44.736Mbps) | 3 days | 2TB and more |
100Mbps | 12 o'Clock in the noon | 5TB and more |
1000Mbps | Less than 1 day | 60TB and more |
The cost of the service is $ 80 for the device and $ 2.49 for each complete and incomplete hour of data operations.
