Two weeks ago we
reported on the creation of a joint venture between Tesla and Toyota, within which Tesla will produce electric cars at Californian factory NUMMI, the former property of Toyota. Yesterday the
details of this transaction became known.
So, the purchase of the NUMMI plant will cost Tesla $ 42 million. The cost of the transaction includes the plant building itself and 207 acres of land.

Toyota equipment will be removed from the factory and will not get Tesla. It will be sold at a public auction. Tesla can compete for the machines that are needed (in fact, the equipment for the production of the Toyota Corolla model is almost completely useless for Tesla).
Calculation of the transaction distressed car start-up will not now, but after the IPO.
The $ 50 million investment that Toyota is going to make in a joint venture also directly depends on whether Tesla can go public on December 31, 2010. If it cannot, then the deal with Toyota is completely canceled. If it does, then Toyota will buy shares for $ 50 million at the market price at public auction.
All this information is published in official documents for the Securities Commission. New details confirm the concerns of some experts that the Tesla-Toyota alliance may turn out to be rather fragile.
As for the joint development of technologies, the SEC documents do not say a word about this. However, in practice, a group of Toyota engineers have already flown out of Japan and Michigan, and today they are expected to arrive at Tesla headquarters in San Carlos, California. Here they will meet with Tesla engineers.
At the factory, NUMMI will assemble a Model S sedan on the electric. It is expected that the release of the car will begin in 2012 at a price of about $ 50 thousand. There are plans to produce a smaller and more affordable electric car for $ 30 thousand.
At first, the plant will employ about 1,000 workers, but someday it may return to the previous level of 5,000 people, as it was during the heyday of NUMMI. Many of the new Tesla employees are recruited from among former Toyota personnel.
