Special breed mouse

This mouse came to me fifteen years ago. It was possible for a year to sit at the graphic terminal, eight of which were connected to DEC Alpha. Best of all from this system, remember the mouse.

First, it was round. And it was unexpectedly comfortable in her hand. Secondly, she stuck in the keyboard. However, I have already seen keyboards that connected to the monitor, more precisely to the terminal. But the most interesting thing about this mouse is from below!

All the other mice at the time were with the ball. Heavy so rubberized. This ball was supposed to turn the rollers from which the movement was read. In practice, the balls were spinning on far from any surface (therefore, we had to use rugs), quickly got dirty (and slipped again) and had to be washed with soap.

This mouse was completely different. Can you come up with an optomechanical design that is free from the listed drawbacks?

The design is no more difficult than a ball, but it works on almost any surface, without any carpet. And does not require periodic cleaning. In the lower part of the mouse there are two rollers, the axes of which are almost vertical, but one is slightly inclined in the longitudinal direction, and the other in the transverse direction. The rollers are pressed to the surface under the action of its own weight.

With longitudinal movements, the roller with a transverse inclination of the axis works - the tangent to its edge coincides with the direction of motion, so it rotates easily. With transverse movements, another roller is spinning. And in real life both work, but with different speeds, by which one can calculate not only the speed, but also the direction of movement.

Quite unexpectedly, I managed to get one copy of this rare animal from the administrator. It seems to be completely working, but there is nothing to check for anything, it differs mechanically and electrically from PKshnyhs.

I really wanted to call the topic “the coffin of a mouse on wheels”, but it was a pity to spoil the intrigue.

Update: in the comments skipped a link to an interesting site: www.oldmouse.com . It turns out there were similar mice with a regular ball (hello, Logitech!). There is also a photo of the viscera , just see something complicated.
