The news appeared on the new
site for Firefox 4 developers , heralding a lot of good for those of us who have limited traffic: the IndexedDB interface will allow Web applications to work even without connecting to the network. The
HTML IndexedDB standard proposed as a supplement is one of a whole collection of technical solutions opening up new horizons for programmers and web developers.
IndexedDB will put some pressure on the Adobe Flash Player, since is his competitor. One of the reasons to show interest in this innovation is the renewal of access and, possibly, the improved editing of Google Docs offline. In addition, there is a noticeable improvement in the performance of some sites, in particular, due to more complex caching.
When a little earlier, in early May, Mozilla announced their plans for Firefox 4, including the desire to release a new version in November, they decided not to support IndexedDB. Now, Mozilla is a bit optimistic about IndexedDB, although it leaves room for maneuver.
“Our team continues to work on the implementation of support for the IndexedDB technology, as well as on its specification, working with Microsoft and other companies,” said Firefox director Mike Beltzner. “The work is moving fast, and over the past two weeks, we can see significant progress in terms of specification. We still strive to incorporate it into Firefox 4, believing that the quality of the specification and implementation can meet the needs of web developers building applications that use client-side storage. Firefox is facing increasing competition from Google Chrome, but its use
continues to grow , and at least for new sites, the browser was able to guarantee those things that could not be guaranteed by Internet Explorer: in particular, responsibility to developers.
IndexedDB is one of a number of technologies that developers should be aware of. In Mozilla, some of the innovations have been mentioned before, but now a more complete list is available. Let me remind you of the main technologies of the fourth Firefox:
- WebM. Google has not yet managed to announce its open source video standard for the Internet, when on May 11 Mozilla completed its own. Although it was not a surprise, WebM did appear in the list of innovations in Firefox 4. Some applications focused on web development have already included support for WebM in assembling their products.
- Multitouch. The iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad do not work with Firefox, but an increasing number of touch and multi-touch phones will be including Google Android.
- WebGL. This technology for creating 3D graphics on the Internet uses the OpenGL ES 2.0 interface, but Google is working on creating technology to overcome the limitations of computers where there are only Windows Direct3D drivers. Google is also working on a higher-level 3D interface based on its O3D plugin.
- WebSockets. This HTML function to improve communication between the browser and the server.
- HTML5 analyzer. The HTML5 specification, although not finished, already leads to an improvement in the rules for interpreting web pages, and Mozilla is moving to a new analyzer to perform this task. The HTML5 parser is faster than its predecessor, and can display SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) among other page elements.
- SMIL (Synchronous Multimedia Language Integration) can be used to animate work at home and step on the heels of Flash from Adobe Systems.
