Two popular science journals,
Nature and
Science, no longer accept Word 2007 manuscripts.
The rules for the authors of the journal Science and Nature say that the changes in Word 2007 are not compatible with the internal automation of workflow. The output .docx file is not accepted by these journals either for review or editing. Authors will have to convert this format to Word 2003 compatible, or Word 2004 for Mac, before being sent to the editors.
In addition to this, Science notes that even despite converting Word 2007 files to old formats, formulas will not be displayed, because the formula editor in Word 2007 is not compatible with
MathML , the XML formatting specification for mathematical symbols and formulas. In order to avoid misunderstandings, Science suggests using either the Math Type formula editor or the formula editor from previous versions of Microsoft Word.
