Foxconn plant in Taiwan the
tenth suicide took place yesterday. Since January of this year, 13 suicide attempts have occurred at the plant among young workers, including 10 successful ones.
The media say that the “suicide crisis” spoils Foxconn’s image and casts a shadow on Apple, which is collecting iPhones and iPads here. Like, working 12 hours a day for $ 150 a month is very hard and people do not stand up.
However, as in the
case of France Telecom last year , simple statistics say the opposite. It is enough just to see that Foxconn in Taiwan, which is the world's largest computer components factory, employs 330,000 people.
The average suicide rate among Chinese is 14 per 100,000 people per year. Although people at the age of 65+ reduce the scores with life much more often than young people, so one can estimate the normal suicide rate among young people at about 10 per 100,000 people per year. Thus, over the past 147 days from the beginning of the year, there should have been (330000/100000) * 10 * 147/365 = 13.3 deaths. But in reality, only 10 occurred, which is significantly below average.

In other words, working at the Foxconn factory de facto reduces suicidal tendencies in people. For a rationally minded person, each new case of suicide, firstly, confirms Foxconn’s good statistics in comparison with the surrounding reality, and secondly, serves as a reminder of how many employees work there. Both are proof of the success of Foxconn, but the headlines in the “
Blood on Your iPhone ”
style can be considered a violation of journalistic ethics or simply proof of the underdevelopment of rational thinking in many people.
Interestingly, in both Taiwan and France, some suicides made it clear that they were blaming their own firm for their deaths. For example, yesterday’s victims chose time especially before a major Foxconn press conference. Here, too, is not surprising. People with depressive inclinations are always looking for a “rational" reason to explain their psychological anomalies. It is quite possible that the widespread coverage of the “suicide crisis” in the mass media pushed them to the accusation of their firm.
