Trading on the stock exchange turns into a battle of mathematicians

A specialist in mathematical logic is not so easy to find work in Russia and even in the United States. Practically the only normal option is to work in the financial field (actuarial mathematics), in banks and investment companies that need to develop strategies for derivatives and risk management. And recently, a new task has appeared: polishing automated trading algorithms, writes American mathematician Christian Marx.

“The depressed market of logisticians received unexpected support. Wall Street companies began secretly and massively recruiting specialists on evidence theory and recursion theory to apply ordinal notation and compacting function to automated trading systems, ”Christian said.

This is a pretty interesting trend. It seems that the battle of automated trading systems is moving to a new stage of evolution. The fact is that their main functionality is to react to the movement of quotations before a person. There are about four seconds to this, until people understand what is happening. Thousands of trades are made during this interval: these are deals for profit and trial trades for checking competitors' automatic strategies. Four seconds after the trend change, all this activity loses its meaning.

Judging by the new appetites of Wall Street, now the developers of such programs are beginning to expand the functionality. After some time, the automatic trading system can switch to the next-order strategy, which exploits the actions of competitors in the previous strategy.

Experts in the theory of evidence receive on Wall Street posts of "quantitative analysts" (trans-quantitative analyst), and their work is not particularly advertised, Christian writes. Mathematicians who have programming experience and are familiar with professional software, such as the ordinals calculator , are particularly welcome. Several logicians have already received positions with a salary of more than a million dollars, inform sources on the stock exchange.
