The KDE team
released the first verification version of what will be finally released in the summer, in August. KDE SC 4.5.0 is designed for those who want to quickly see what's new will appear on their desktops and netbooks this summer. KDE is now in a state of solid beta, that is, the main task is to correct errors and prepare a stable release for the entire assembly.
KDE SC 4.5 supports many improvements, including:
')
1)
redesigned notification area . Thanks to the new D-Bus-based protocol that replaced the old “system tray” - now applications and toolkits will have the
same look and compatible methods of interaction .
2)
Tiling in KWin will automatically position the windows one after another, implementing
the window management paradigm , which is already used in such systems as Ion. Advanced graphic effects, such as blurring the background of translucent windows, will allow you to organize a more pleasant and convenient work.
3) Users who prefer to use
WebKit as their engine (rather than KHTML, which is now used in Konqueror, the main KDE browser), can now install the WebKit component and then switch Konqueror to use WebKit as
the default engine for displaying websites . This component is available through the KDE's Extragear repository, and is based on the popular KPart technology, and fully integrates password storage, content locking, and other features that Konqueror users already like.
4) Especially in this issue, we decided to focus on the
stability of the programs included in KDE SC 4.5. In spite of the fact that a lot of new features appeared in it, the developers spent quite a lot of time on their final development, and on polishing what has not yet shown all its beauty.
Initially focusing on KDE SC 4.5.0, the KDE PIM development team decided to postpone the release of KMail, an email client based on Akonadi, for one month. The new version of KMail will be part of the monthly updates. All this time a stable version of KMail from KDE SC 4.4 will be supported. With Akonadi, it will be possible to centralize the synchronization and caching of personal data, providing broader support for groupware servers. In addition, using data sharing between different programs will increase the efficiency of using and managing personal data, such as contacts, calendar or mail.
