Cars will learn to automatically turn off the engine at a traffic light signal
“Sorry, Sergey, I cannot allow the engine to idle,” such words would bring the car of the future to the instrument panel before forcibly muffling the engine. IBM has applied for patent number 20100125402 , which describes the "engine control system at busy intersections to improve fuel economy."
It is assumed that the automatic system will respond to a red signal from a traffic light, then it will determine the coordinates of the surrounding cars and make an assessment: how long it will take to stand in traffic (it is estimated that it becomes economically efficient to stop the engine for more than 10 seconds ). If the result is positive, the driver will receive the above message on the control panel, the car will turn off the engine and send messages about this to the surrounding vehicles. The system works according to this algorithm.
