Greetings to the habrasoobshchestvo. Today I would like to touch on the topic of PC-x86 in the car. This area is very vaguely displayed in this blog, except for
car racks for laptops.
Next under the cut are a dozen photos with peppered text. Geek motorists, you will be interested.
')
Car
Ford Transit is a pre-latest model produced from 2000 to 2006 inclusive. Medium base and height, 2 sliding doors on the sides. Initially, 3 seater (ala Gazelle?))), But has been redone. Half of the truck part of the car, it was decided to fence in favor of increasing the cabin. Thus, it was possible to install another row of seats. (Ford’s native “stools” were also removed, all the BMW heated seats) The cabin is spacious, even if you are standing on your head, the trunk is very roomy at the same time. :)
Without going into details, the entire cabin is treated with thermo-sound insulation, upholstered with thick plywood, and then covered with a Carpet.
PC
The selection of components was not a difficult task. Of course, this is a fashionable Intel Atom + i945 bundle now. The reasons for this choice are many. The ability to install in a small case, despite this, eliminates the problem of cooling, a small price and, at the same time, almost all components are included in the $ 50-100. Worried about performance ... and in vain, everything loads quickly and runs, watching FullHD in traffic was not in the plans. ;)
- HDD - by itself, only notebook 2.5 ', about SSD - is still too expensive.
- RAM - 1GB, enough. More - too long inclusion after hibernate. Less - obviously not enough for a full-fledged comfortable work CarPC.
- The DVD drive is a regular notebook (NEC).
All components are neatly installed in the Mini-ITX case
Modecom FEEL 102 , screwed 1 small cooler, run in half-power.
This small box is located under the navigator's seat. :)
* Soon the case is to be replaced, I want 2 HDD, drive in the "glove box", close up all the openings with dust filters and other small treats.
Power
Power is provided by a regular power supply inside the case, the allowable voltage at the input is 7-14 volts. It feeds directly from the battery through the diode (-1 volt). On - not a fixed button, off. - either by the same button, or the ACC of a car with a delay of two minutes. (any time relay)
FRONT LCD
The selection was not great. Either the Chinese, assembled on the knee, NONAME, or the Chinese Mystery with at least some manufacturer’s warranty. The display is motorized, he is going to the car 0.5DIN. At the entrance - RCA, VGA, S-Video, TV tuner with a separate remote unit. From the outputs - usb to connect to the pc (touchscreen operation). Touch, resistor, sensitivity is acceptable, adjustable in the service menu.
Mystery MMT-8120
USB on the panel.
REAR LCD
Regular 17-inch LCD monitor mounted in the ceiling. It is quite comfortable to watch HouseM.D. When there is free time in the car.
But at that time there was no monitor with 12V power supply, so I had to purchase a cheap inverter from 12 to 220V, and on the long road, 220V would not hurt.
Control
To control the touch-screen is quite convenient, but not when you're sitting behind the wheel. Came to the aid of a
3d-joystick from Logitech . As usual, this brand pleases. Very high quality, pleasant materials. Despite the very unusual use of the joystick, it turned out to be very convenient to use. No false positives, easy to calibrate and adjust.
* Armrest should be covered with leather.
Sound
Recently undergone refinement. It turns out that there is a pin-out digital output on the selected motherboard, a pleasant surprise. The
Chalenger amplifier (by the way, was developed in Russia), which has on its board digital coaxial and optical inputs with a hardware decoder 5.1, was immediately ordered. To say that the sound is better is to say nothing. It must be heard. HDD immediately seemed small due to a heavy flac.
Subwoofer 18 inches, the body for which is the "trunk", in combination with a torture chamber (see 2 photos).
Racks with tweeters.

WindowsXP +
Centrafuse . At the moment, finding something better is difficult. The bundle is stable, quite good interface. (

Conclusion
In conclusion, I would like to say that in the future, I would not be surprised if I see a 1-2DIN x86-PC already with a display, touch screen, which can be just as easily inserted into a standard hole in a car, just like a regular car stereo now. No, I’m not saying that this is a direct continuation of the development branch of car players, it still takes a lot of tweaking, doping, not to mention support, which is unacceptable for a large market. Perhaps the future for a certain kind of embedded-systems working out of the box.
Despite this, now you can try using a PC as a car stereo, GPS auto-navigator, not to mention a video surveillance system (simple web cameras are fine), engine monitoring and control, and other things that we could only dream when using standard methods.
