The replicator is a device that was first introduced in the American science fiction series Star Trek (Star Trek) and which allows you to create any other things / devices. A lot of time passed since the end of the 60s, when the first episodes of the series were filmed, and today I’ll tell you about a 3D printer that can be called one of the first versions of Star Trek Replicator and which actually allows you to materialize things using 3D printing technology - Cupcake CNC from MakerBot industries ).
The creators of Makerbot - Zach Hoeken and Bre Pettis - were inspired by Star Trek Replicator. What is special about their creation? ')
First of all - its availability. A traditional 3D printer is a fairly expensive machine, and not everyone can afford it, not to mention the necessary technical support and difficulties associated with operation (when working with some materials, additional equipment is needed to ensure safe operation of the printer). The most advanced model Cupcake Delux costs only 950 US dollars, while remaining very easy to operate. Cupcake uses one of the most popular 3D printing technologies - FDM (Fused Deposition Molding), which allows you to operate the printer without any additional inconvenience to the user. The print uses ABS plastic, which melts and is applied layer by layer, forming the desired shape, in a 3D printer.
Secondly, the creators of Makerbot also founded the open source community - thingiverse , which allows you to share 3D files and projects that users have already printed in their home 3D printers. All files are available for free download. Thus, even those users who do not have experience in 3D modeling can immediately start working with a 3D printer.
Thirdly, Cupcake itself is an open source device, and each user can modify it at his own discretion (for example, try printing something from a different material). Most even the most modern 3D printers do not allow such freedom of creation.
Cupcake allows you to print objects up to 10.3x10.3x15.3 cm in size, which is pretty good. Of course, this is only the first generation of true personal 3D printers, so printing too complex forms presented in my previous posts is not yet available. But I am sure that the Makerbot team is already working on the next generation of Cupcake, and in the near future we will see a new version of a truly personalized 3D printer from Makerbot industries, and the Replicator from Star Trek will be another step closer to reality.
