Wi-Fi networks in Germany are obliged to become closed

Yesterday, the Supreme Criminal Court of Germany decided that the owners of private wireless networks will now be required to set a connection password. This should prevent pirated content lovers from downloading illegal movies and music using open networks.

If it turns out that someone downloaded pirated files through an open network, the network owner will have to pay a fine of up to € 100.

The complexity of the password resolution is not specified, and nothing is said about the methods of protection, moreover, no security upgrades are needed - only a password.
Users themselves are obliged to check the security of their networks.

The precedent to the decision was the lawsuit of the author, upon reviewing which it turned out that the user's Wi-Fi network, which may have illegally downloaded the song, was opened. But the user can prove, for example, that he was on vacation and thus avoid responsibility, so the court decided that the user should be responsible, at least, to protect his connection from abuse.

According to data from Bitkom , the German Information Technology Association in Germany, about 26 million homes have wireless Internet connections.
