Periodically, I have a question: “Is everything right in my work?”. And the answer to it: "Of course, not all!". I think this question was asked to myself by everyone or most of the system administrators. And the answer to it is always the same. Why? Because a person is a rational being, prone to self-development (although there are exceptions) and modernization of his environment. Something is constantly changing in the outside world, technologies are being developed, interfaces are changing, and technological processes are being simplified or complicated. And it all leads to a reassessment of one’s own values and abilities.
On the one hand, this leads to dissatisfaction with their physical work (we create, above what we do). Incorrectly written code / script, not optimized database, too complex structure for creating and maintaining something (domain structure, users), etc. You can continue this list for a long time. What do these reflections lead to? That's right - to modernize their work. The code / script is rewritten, the bases are optimized, the structures and processes are simplified, "knocked out" and installed new equipment. And this is the result of professional growth, a new round of development. After some time, this circle is repeated with various modifications.
On the other hand, there is dissatisfaction with their place of work, if such does not allow to realize the accumulated potential. And this already leads to a variety of consequences: stopping in development, changing jobs, changing the position in the company (relationship), etc. For each of its consequences. Well, someone can translate this potential into absolutely incredible mutations of experience and available technologies.
Analyzing my experience, the experience of friends and acquaintances, I can say that it is better to develop in a new place of work than to develop an old place of work. I mean only those cases when the old employer was “conserved”, i.e. it does not move forward, because when the worker is in constant motion, there is no need to change anything. In the end, you can find exactly what you need, with the right rhythm, development and fun.
