First look at Twitter annotations

During yesterday's presentation in London, at the first of its kind Twitter developer conference , Raffi Krikorian, an engineer from Twitter, shed light on how the long-awaited annotation feature will look like (he called it “Twannotations”).

Annotations will allow you to add arbitrary metadata to any tweet. For example, today tweets can be tagged with the application tag to which it is sent and the place from which it was sent. All metadata will filter and sort tweets.

Krikorian also noted that each annotation to a tweet will have a type, and each type will have several properties. This information will be subject to the “visibility policy” as tweets themselves, which means that it will be public until you make your account personal.

More importantly, Krikorian noted that the user will be able to add whatever they want to annotations. Twitter will first offer their options to help developers, but, apparently, will not limit them.
Twitter will probably also publish annotation statistics. These statistics will show the most popular topics and trends annotations.
