Let's replace the taskbar dock

In the stylish, modern Ubuntu Lynx desktop, which a new user sees when they first log into the system, there is one spot from the past: the taskbar. It is the same as it was in gnome 1.4, KDE 2.0 or in Windows XP - modern competitors from the “big three” - Win7 and MacOS X - offer panels with iridescent rainbow colors with some (win7, displaying the progress of operations) or many (dock osx , you will not list everything) additional useful functions. In the ubuntu gnome the same - as in the early 2000s - the icon and the non-persistent window name.

There is a wonderful Docky program that allows using a simple helper script to “communicate” any program (for example, im-client pidgin or torrent-client transmission) with its icon in the dock. The Pidgin icon, for example, displays the number of unread messages, and by right-clicking on it, it is possible to change the status. Transmission on its icon displays the speed. And by right-clicking on the player icon, you can go to the next song or stop playback.
There are not many such helper'es yet, but if you write them to each program that is actively used on dextp, you can get such a functional “taskbar”, which is not only an order of magnitude better than the current one with a single function - “close the window”, but also shut up win7 task and dock macos x
All programs included in the “default” Ubuntu delivery for the last few years have received a good profit in the form of populization among users, bug feedback and also from committees of Ubuntu developers.
So let's vote for this good start on the ubuntu brainstorm !
In addition to the docky, there are still many docks, the most stable and developing of which is probably the AWN . Perhaps the community will decide that it is more worthy.
