"Underwater snakes" or a new approach to the use of tidal energy

The new type of tidal turbines, called "underwater snakes" have become close to commercial use.

Deep Green, developed by the Swedish company Minesto, has already received $ 2.5 million from investors to test the technology next year.
The technology is a turbine with a wing attached to the bottom on a cable with a length of 100 meters. The wing control system allows you to receive up to ten times more energy than current provides and allows you to produce about 500 kilowatts.
One of the advantages of the technology is its small size - about 12 meters.

The above is a comparative table.

The company hopes to start testing in 2011 in Northern Ireland, where, in fact, the commercial use of tidal energy, a company specializing in renewable energy sources SeaGen, began earlier.
The Minesto company itself was founded only 3 years ago, the project originates in 2003 as a result of the technological tests of the Saab company.

Luke Blandin, a researcher at the Sustainable Energy Research Group at the University of Southampton in Britain, considers this technology to be very promising.
There is already a similar way of obtaining energy, these are the so-called barrier dams, similar to hydroelectric stations. They use similar technology tides. However, the "sea snakes" benefit from the fact that they work more efficiently at low flow rates, as well as at great depths, which allows them to be installed on almost any place.

“Technology, though expensive, is reliable. It will not solve all the problems, but will be part of the energy balance, ”Blandin told CNN.

A small update was the place to be.
