The first laptop with support for Light Peak

Yesterday, the Intel Research Center in Brussels held the first demonstration of a laptop with a built-in Light Peak port, which can transmit information at a speed of 10 Gbit / s (in the long run, up to 100 Gbit / s) with a cable length of up to 100 m.

The two cores of the fiber are embedded directly into the USB cable that connected the Light Peak port on the laptop to the fiber-optic receiver of the TV (the dark blue box in the photo). Broadcast HD-video passed without visible lags.

In the future, the Light Peak bus can force out USB, DisplayPort and HDMI and become the only standard for connecting peripheral devices. The standard was developed jointly with Apple.

The Light Peak tire was first demonstrated last September at IDF 2009, with the Apple Blue Motherboard being used for the demonstration.
