Considering all the attention that is now focused on smartphones, and
not for nothing, given their prices at which they go on sale, as well as the level of profit, the degree of their attractiveness to consumers - it is still difficult to forget about the fact that they occupy a small market share.
At least according to one of the most recent reports from ABIresearch, in the 4th quarter of 2009, 336.6 million units were sold. But if you look at the numbers, it becomes clear that RIM (RIM) and Apple (AAPL) have come close to the top five market leaders and may soon take their place in it.
')
In the last quarter, RIM and Apple together sold approx. 19 million units, and this accounted for approximately 5.6% of the market. Here is a list of companies - five market leaders - and their share in this market, according to the ABI report:
* Nokia - 37.7%
* Samsung - 20.5%
* LG - 10.1%
* Sony-Ericsson - 4.3%
* Motorola (MOTO) - 3.6%
Neither RIM nor Apple managed to sell enough mobile devices to enter the top five. But do not forget, for example, having a market share of 3.6%, Motorola sold 12 million. So it is not surprising that neither RIM nor Apple will succeed in taking the place of Motorola for the next 9 months.
If this happened, it would be for the first time, when the manufacturer, concentrating only on the production of smartphones, could achieve such a result. Imagine what it would be if all the vendor companies that are now on this list would be engaged in the production of multifunction phones, obviously, what this would lead to.
This raises the second question: if an increasing number of people become owners of smartphones, what will happen with sales of netbooks (netbooks) and even laptops? I suspect more and more people will find that they simply do not need them. Perhaps this will open up the development paths for electronic tablets (tablets) made by Apple or other vendors, whose main functionality is not to synchronize with the desktop, but to work in concert with your smartphone.
