The largest study of the effects of cell phones on the brain

European scientists decided to put an end to the discussion of how harmful high-frequency electromagnetic radiation is to the brain. Yesterday, the most ambitious project in this area was launched: the health of 250 thousand experimental subjects will be monitored for 30 (thirty) years.

Monitoring will be subjected to 250 thousand people aged 18-69 years in Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and Denmark. During all this time, scientists will collect their bills for mobile communications and medical history. For thirty years, enough data should accumulate to detect reliable correlations between the first and second.

When studying medical history, special attention will be paid to the occurrence of organ cancer in the head and neck, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, MND, strokes, cardiac disorders, as well as minor ailments, such as sleep disturbance, headache, tinnitus, depression).

The Cohort Study on Mobile Communications (COSMOS) project is fundamentally different from all similar studies that have been conducted before. Firstly, those were short-term: monitoring was conducted for less than 10 years, while it may take 10-15 years to show the symptoms of cancer.

Secondly, most of them were based on surveys and, of course, in any case, their accuracy is a big question. The global mobile market, according to iSuppli, in 2009 exceeded $ 1 trillion, so in this area, for some restrictions, we need very serious and indisputable evidence. To date, no major organization in the field of health protection has reliable evidence of the harm of mobile phones.

The COSMOS project, unfortunately, will not study the impact of mobile phones on children, although it is obvious that if this effect is harmful, then it is the most dangerous for children (just as children react more strongly to solar radiation and chemical pollution) . Now, some doctors do not recommend using mobile phones to children up to 11-12 years old.

According to skeptics, the project organizers may have problems with volunteers who are needed in such a large number. It is difficult to find a quarter of a million people willing to share their private data for scientific purposes. In the UK, volunteer recruitment has already begun. Approximately 2.4 million subscribers of the largest telecom operators Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile and Orange received by mail invitations to participate in the study. Scientists hope that at least 90-100 thousand of them will agree. As of yesterday, 232 people gave their consent.
