2 changes in Google Reader

When I went to Google Reader today, I noticed another one on the top, next to the settings links (settings) and my account (my account) - Offline marked “new”, and a new item “Trends” appeared in the left panel. But - everything in more detail.

So offline.

I became interested. When clicking on the link, a window appeared in which a description of Google Gears was provided in English. From the description it became clear that we are talking about some way of using GReader offline, using the browser extension. Further it was proposed to download the extension, or opt out.
')
Interested in even more, I clicked on “install”.

So, GoogleGearsSetup.exe is on my computer. After a quick installation procedure (during which I was outraged by the antivirus three times, and the firewall 2 times), I restarted the browser and went back into Google Reader.

Then the fun began. The browser gave me a window in which it was written (in English, of course) that this site would be used by Google Gears. Do I agree? Yes, I agree. Google Reader was loaded, and on the site of a recent “ofline” link I saw a button with a green arrow - this indicated that the reader is now online. When you clicked, a small download panel appeared - Reader downloaded 2000 news from all my feeds into my memory. After a few seconds, the panel was removed, and the arrow turned into blue.

So, now Google reader works ofline. What does this give us? saving traffic + speed (as in online mode, when selecting a tape or category / tag to read, the reader checked tapes for updates; now this does not happen, that is, all the news Reader takes from “memory”).
But there are also disadvantages: the inability to use online features, such as adding new subscriptions.

Another feature is Trends ...

... was available before, but in order to find it you had to break your head :) Now, however, to use trends, i.e. You can view Google Reader statistics on your feeds by clicking on the trends item on the left. Specifically, it shows the statistics of the most readable and updated tapes, the number of all tapes, etc. Pleasantly surprised tag cloud below, showing the most popular tags (sorry for the tautology) :)

Summing up, it remains to say only one thing - developers are striving to make Google Reader even more user-friendly, and this is good news. And despite the fact that Reader still has the status of "Labs", it is now more convenient than most online RSS aggregators. Keep it up, google =)

PS Yes, I almost forgot: a link to the Gears site from where you can download it - gears.google.com (there, however, very little information, just a description).
