Wikipedia: non english one ...

Despite the fact that most of Wikipedia is written in literally a dozen languages, one of the most important tasks of Wikipedia is the development of sections in small and endangered languages.

The absence of a couple of hundred thousand articles in English or a thousand or two in Russian will not make the language poorer. We have (so far) millions of people speak it, they write, swear, and sue.

But in Russia there are hundreds of languages that are literally on the verge of extinction.

Here are a few examples: the Adyghe, Gorno-Mari, Karelian, Lezghin, Tat, Yakut, Erzya, Udmurt, Pontic, Moksha ...

These languages are still used in everyday life. But they have an insignificantly small writing, vanishingly insignificant. Therefore, Wikipedia for these languages is an opportunity to get (create) new, important texts. Ability to save and develop language.

A long time ago (by the standards of the Internet), the idea was to create a branch of the Wikimedia Foundation, which, in particular, would deal with these issues. And, preferably, not only on the Internet, but also attracting people "from the side of life that is behind the Internet."

The foundation has appeared. Not shaky, not rough, but the first result: a grant from the Kastren Society for a specific task: the development of the Udmurt section of Wikipedia.

The grant was received by the “Institute for Advanced Studies and Retraining of Education Workers of the Udmurt Republic” (aka IPKIPROUR), with the active and active participation of Wikimedia.Ru.

Due to the fact that work on a section starts at a higher level than small sections usually live, I want to ask everyone who knows Udmurt not to be lazy, but to finish writing a little bit ...

At the same time I want to explain the situation with "writing Wikipedia for money." The purpose of the grant is not to “write Wikipedia”, but to push the section towards development. As the statistics of other sections show, the language section begins to live a more or less normal life after a certain number of articles. Apparently, these are the main pages that do not greatly enthrall visitors who have come in randomly (the first version of the main page of the Russian section). The main task is to give a sufficient body of text for the development of the project on its own, in the wiki model. Unfortunately, the fewer native speakers, the longer it takes to begin a full-fledged life of the linguistic section. Perhaps there is a critical number below which this model will not be able to fly “without help from others”.

This grant is an attempt to “kick” a section a little higher so that it can unfold its wings.
