Video editor Lightworks goes under Open Source

EditShare will release the Lightworks program under a free license this summer. A professional editor for non-linear editing, the first version of which was published in 1989, has since been stubbornly trying to compete with Apple products. A British developer company was repeatedly resold, and eventually acquired EditShare last year.

In the Lightworks system, among others, many well-known films were edited, of the latter ones - “ Centurion ” and “ The Island of the Damned ” from Martin Scorsese.

Lightworks has a compatible working file format with Final Cut Pro and Avid.

The Lightworks editor has implemented many functions unique to its time, including synchronized video playback with audio at an arbitrary speed, synchronized multichannel playback, an object-oriented user interface with a hardware console. Some of them are still not fully supported on Macs.

Representatives of the company say that a total of more than a million hours worked on the program code, and after its discovery, concepts and functionality never seen before will be available. "I think that Lightworks Open Source will change not only technology, but also the idea of what professional nonlinear editing tools are capable of," said James Richings, co-managing director of the company.

The reasons for the transition to Open Source can be guessed. The fact is that Lightworks is a software and hardware platform that includes several programs and various types of equipment, including consoles for installation. Obviously, the development company will continue to make money on the sale of equipment and software and hardware systems.
