Netgear DGN3500: a first look at the first in Russia router with ADSL, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n support

I have long wanted to buy an ADSL router with gigabit Ethernet and 802.11. Last summer, I went to the store, being sure that this goodness was just there. And it broke off sternly: without ADSL, the options were already there, and with it, neither in autumn nor in winter did anything appear on sale.
And just recently, Russia got the most that neither is, the first router of the desired configuration - Netgear DGN3500. More precisely, his full name is much longer - Netgear DGN3500 RANGEMAX WIRELESS-N GIGABIT MODEM ROUTER. But every time you get tired of his copy-economy, and there is no point.

The router is very thin - 2.5 centimeters. There are no antennas outside. Not lazy, took out a screwdriver, climbed inside. And there it is:

Antennas really are, two whole pieces. It seems small at all, but the range is my respect. I have an apartment on the fifth floor of an old school panel house. From the opposite side of the house, about twenty meters from the wall by the iPhone, the signal is perfectly simply caught.

For support of the Gigabit Ethernet interface the chip Realtek RTL8366RB is responsible. Pretty new.

The Atheros chip, which is responsible for WiFi, is not so young, it was announced in December 2007. That is, 802.11n is not quite final here, but draft 2.0. Trifle, of course.

Chip Infineon pleased. Not only is it “virtually dual-core”, as written in the specifications (Hyper-Threading, apparently stuck), but the USB Host itself supports, no need for any additional chips on the board to unsolder.

In general, the piece of iron is very sensible, if it were not for a strange menu. And it also “pleased” that if you incorrectly set the encryption algorithm when you first connect to the access point (TKIP instead of AES), you will not be able to connect at full speed. You can change the setting only when reset to factory settings.

Well, in terms of speed: via Ethernet between two computers, it fires up to 43 megabytes per second (exactly megabytes, not megabytes), and 8-9 by air. True, I still have controllers in laptops not enough kosher, more than 150 megabits are not connected. I think to buy one new, intelovsky, and try again. I think it will be faster.
