The US Federal Trade Commission will conduct an antitrust investigation into Google’s purchase of DoubleClick

The United States Federal Trade Commission (hereinafter the FTC) has announced plans to begin preparing an antitrust audit regarding Google ’s acquisition of the DoubleClick Internet advertising company for $ 3.1 billion.

The investigation, as reported by one of the leaders, who wished to remain anonymous, because does not have the right to report this kind of information, began at the end of last week, after it became known that the FTC, and not the Department of Justice, would lead the inspection. These two agencies have divided responsibilities in antitrust compliance with the law.

The deal, which includes the two predominant forces in the online advertising niche, has led private lawyers and warring parties to worry about the legality of such a deal. According to antitrust experts, these concerns and the amount of the transaction naturally led to a preliminary investigation.

Google has announced that it is confident that it can withstand this investigation.

Within a few weeks, and perhaps even days, the FTC will decide on the severity of the antimonopoly verification of this transaction, as experts say. This move, better known as “re-demand” of information, will indicate that this deal may violate antitrust laws.

“It seems very important to us that FTK is investigating Google ’s DoubleClick deal,” said Mark Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center .

A few days after it became aware of the deal, EPIC and two other law firms: the Center of Digital Democracy and the US Public Interest Research Group , sent a complaint to the FTC with a request to consider the consequences of this deal.

The complaint noted that Google collects information regarding user search queries, while DoubleClick tracks the sites they visit. The merger, as stated in the complaint, "will give one company more information about consumers than any other company in the world has."
