uTorrent Vuze faster by 16%

Specialists from the University of California conducted an analysis of the speed of downloading torrents, depending on the version of the client. The measurements took place in August 2009 on the same data set (the 600 most popular Pirate Bay torrents) and a sample of 10 million users ( PDF ).

The absolute majority of users work with the two most popular torrent clients: uTorrent and Vuze. And it is very surprising that these two clients showed a very noticeable difference in download speeds.

On the entire sample, uTorrent shows download speeds about 16% higher.

The results are virtually independent of the ISP. Only the American provider Verizon, whose uTorrent and Vuze work approximately equally, stands out from the general picture, even Vuze is noticeably faster at times. Apparently, this is due to the total shaping.

The researchers went further and conducted a reverse engineering of two torrent clients to find out the reason for such serious differences. They found that uTorrent and Vuze are radically different in two aspects: how they process information about neighboring feasts and how they distribute the speed of apload among peers. Thus, it can be assumed that the download speed somehow depends on these two parameters.

Interestingly, the Apollo analytical system from Telefonica Research ( PDF ) was used to collect data. Among other things, it shows in real time, the users of which countries download torrents at maximum speed. Here is a picture for one of the days (the lighter - the faster).
