Books for mobile phones

Against the background of the global crisis of the book publishing business, the latest fashion in Japan attracts attention - the crazy popularity of e-books for mobile phones. This market has exceeded ÂĄ 10 billion ($ 82 million) per year.

Keitai Books (“keitai” in Japanese means “mobile phone”) is a special genre of literature that has its own classics. For example, the latest bestseller by one of the most popular authors Mika Naito (Mica Naitoh), at a rate of 160,000 downloads per day. According to experts, many of Keita’s readers have already completely refused to buy paper literature.

Keita has two key advantages over paper books: a more efficient distribution system and the impossibility of reselling a book. The second reason is very important for publishers, which is why they happily adopted a new technology.

During the first experiments with Keita in 2002, it became clear that authors who are popular on paper cannot be sold electronically. The audience for some reason does not accept them. After that, the publishers experimented with pornography - it also did not go, because the main audience of Keita, as it turned out, are women. Only now, by 2006–2007, marketers were able to correctly understand the market and propose a suitable genre for it. Detectives with a love line and elements of erotica became a hit.

The transition of the author from Keita to paper, on the contrary, can be quite successful. The most popular digital novel “Deep love” about teenage prostitution was published in a classic format and sold 2.7 million copies. The author of the best-selling book Yoshi will also receive deductions from contracts for the movie, television series and manga comics.
