The Commission for the World Cultural Heritage has named the first 18 websites that have received the status of the World Intangible Property. The decision on the establishment of this status was taken at the XXXI meeting of the Commission in 2007, and since then experts have painstakingly selected worthy sites.
In 1972, UNESCO adopted the
Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage . Since then, the status of a World Cultural or Natural Heritage Site has been regularly awarded to natural areas, man-made structures, or “mixed” objects that need protection from all of humanity. The importance of preserving intangible heritage was confirmed in 2003 by the adoption of
the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage .
The
list of World Heritage sites includes the Athenian Acropolis, the historical center of St. Petersburg, the Moscow Kremlin, Venice, the Great Barrier Reef, Yellowstone National Park, Lake Baikal, the Curonian Spit, etc .; The total number of World Heritage sites is close to nine hundred. There is also a list of World Heritage Sites under threat of destruction. Entering objects into this list means the need to take urgent measures to preserve them.
The Internet is becoming increasingly important in the daily lives of people, becoming an integral part of culture, - said the Chairman of the Commission Vijaparang Sopromat, presenting the first sites, - Unfortunately, the Internet sites that form the basis of this global intangible wealth also threaten destruction.
Just as the Taliban in Afghanistan destroyed the statues of the Buddha, hackers constantly threaten our intangible cultural heritage on the Internet, the Security Council noted, only last year the Dresden Philharmonic Internet library, which contained many unique recordings of the world's best voices, was partially damaged, and also completely the site of the largest Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets, reflecting the country's history since 1919, was destroyed.
The content of sites that have received the status of the World Intangible Property will be copied to special gold-plated DVDs, which are about 100 times more durable than the usual “blanks”, and deposited in the Alexandria Library (Egypt).
The first deposit ceremony will take place on June 31, 2010, when the first 18 sets of disks will be laid into the library fund. Copies of these discs will also be transferred to the Library of Congress, the European Digital Library Europeana, the Presidential Library. B.N. Yeltsin and other major libraries and archives of the world.
Among the sites that first received the status of the World Intangible Property, the largest search engine Google, the European Electronic Library Europeana, the “popular” Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia, Flickr photo hosting, the IMDB world cinema knowledge base and the Metropolitan Museum website.
The selection of sites claiming the status of the World Intangible Assets is made by experts from 12 countries. For the region of Eastern Europe, which includes Russia, in the selection committee is responsible for the
IPO "Information for All" .
Russia has so far declared only one site - a candidate for the status of World Intangible Assets, - said Yevgeny Altovsky, the head of the Information and Analytical Service of the IPO "Information for All", who was, without exaggeration, a cult place of virtual communication for many Russians.
Unfortunately, while considering this candidacy, there were still insoluble copyright issues. However, the chances of a “Live Journal” still remain, since the Commission is currently developing the relevant regulations.
