The cause of accidents Toyota may be ... cosmic radiation

As is known, the world's largest car maker is now under criticism: in America alone, more than 100 people died because of the glitches in the electronic control system of a Toyota car, most likely. True reasons have not yet been established, but different versions are being put forward, why the electronics can give similar failures.

Perhaps the most original version was put forward by Vanderbilt Lloyd W. Massengill, director of development at the American Institute of Space and Defense Electronics Vanderbilt.

He argues that when using electronic chips, there is a chance that random extraneous cosmic particles can get into the circuit and change the values of some bits.

As is known, the parasitic electromagnetic radiation comes from a variety of devices (for example, mobile phones, microwave ovens), but the power of this radiation can in no way be enough to change the values of bits in the circuits of the microcircuits. Only much more powerful particles are capable of this, for example, neutrons from the lead components of the microchip body (meaning radioactive isotopes of lead ) or even proton flux from the Sun.

The problem of solar radiation is well known to space engineers who are involved in the design of electronic control systems for satellites and other spacecraft, where radiation greatly affects the performance of instruments.

The earth is well protected by a magnetic field, at least, before this protection was sufficient.

The effect is most likely to manifest itself in Toyota cars, since the most technologically advanced manufacturer supplies the latest models of their cars with the maximum amount of ultra-small electronic components (larger chips of the old generation simply because of their geometry are better protected from cosmic radiation).

Massengill is not alone in his opinion. The scientific journal Live Science published an article in which its version is supported by other experts. They say that automotive electronics can be subjected to special tests for irradiation of protons and neutrons, as is done with electronic components for spacecraft. Only if the modules pass this test and do not fail, then you can use them in critical systems, for example, in circuits with gas pedal sensors in the car. So far, none of the automakers are not checking electronics by such methods.
