April Fools PS3 firmware update will disable the ability to install Linux

Sony officially announced in its US and European blogs that the new firmware version 3.21, which will be released on April 1, 2010, will remove the Install Other OS feature from the PS3 feature list, which is currently available on all PS3 consoles except PS3 Slim . This feature in particular allows you to install on a Linux console and use it as a normal PC.

Of course, updating the firmware of your console is optional, but then many functions will become unavailable, such as: the ability to log in to PlayStation Network, play over the network, play new BDs and play games that will require a new firmware version, and use all new features that will be added to the PS3 after this firmware (and this, in particular, stereo mode in games and Blu-Ray 3D, the beginning of which support is scheduled for this summer).

Most likely this is due to the fact that at the beginning of this year, hacker George Hotz (George Hotz), also known by the nickname GeoHot, said that he had received full access to memory and the console processor. Sony just decided to play it safe and remove this loophole for a possible complete cracking of the console.
