Microsoft is launching 4 opensource projects to improve interoperability between identity management systems, and announced that it will release one open identification specification.
The company also
announced a partnership to integrate its Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 with directories based on the OpenLDAP opensource specification.
Microsoft has worked to improve the integration between identification technologies, especially based on the Information Card technology and its subsequent implementation in Vista -
CardSpace .
IBM and
Novell worked on the Higgins opensource-project, whose goal was to connect applications and identity management systems. Developer Chuck Mortimer (Chuck Mortimer) created on the Java-applet for the browser - ID card selector. Kevin Miller created an extension for Firefox to support CardSpace.

Last week, Microsoft, along with Novell, the Liberty Alliance, and other companies participated in testing ID card compatibility with five different selector interfaces. Testing was conducted at the Internet Identity Workshop conference organized by the Open Source Identity System. Microsoft’s final step is to open its identity platform, which includes the Identity Selector Interoperability Profile (ISIP) - this will allow third-party developers to create their own digital wallets.
In addition, Microsoft launches 4 opensource-projects designed to help web developers in the implementation of ID cards.
The purpose of the first three projects is to create applications that define the security policies of sites, as well as applications that accept ID cards using Java for the Java System Web Server, Apache Tomcat or IBM WebSphere Application Server, or using PHP for Apache Web. The fourth project focuses on the C library, which can be used in any website and service. These projects copy support for informational maps that were already present in the Visual Studio development environment.
Microsoft also wants to put together a team from Kernel Works and the Oxford Computer Group to create a bridge between OpenLDAP and Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager (ILM) 2007. This should provide bi-directional synchronization between the ILM and OpenLDAP repositories.
