This is a free translation of the text from videoonwikipedia.org . Under the cut is also a message from the deputy director of the Wikimedia Foundation.Open Video Alliance ,
Mozilla Drumbeat ,
creator of the video player Miro ,
Wikimedia New York , also using
Kaltura technology,
announced the launch of a campaign to draw attention to the video on Wikipedia . Millions of people read Wikipedia every day. Soon they will also watch her!
As you know, anyone can upload their videos to Wikipedia
because of which they have closed iFolder.ru . Why add a video? It is a video like nothing else can explain some points. There are millions of articles on Wikipedia, but they are not as expressive. Isn't it great to see how bridges are built in Petersburg? Isn't it great to see the
march of dissent Parade on Red Square on May 9?
')
There are very few videos on Wikipedia right now . It's time to change this! Giving a revolution to open video! Shoot and
upload videos to Wikipedia ! This is a great opportunity to support
HTML5 / Theora with very simple actions accessible to everyone. Your contribution will help make Wikipedia content richer, help spread free (like free speech, not free beer) knowledge and free video format! The battle for HTML5 / Theora is not yet lost, and YouTube is not the entire Internet.
A simple example. You can 1) remove, for example, your cat or dog with a digital camera (so that you can see how your paws move and muscles work), 2) convert the video to
Ogg Theora and 3)
upload to Wikimedia Commons by choosing one of the free licenses. You can not even imagine how many people around the world
will know how the food looks will get the opportunity to use this video for various useful purposes. And if you dig up some of your Soviet-era videos, it will be very different!
While the video is being converted, you can watch, for example, the cartoon Elephants Dream or other videos with subtitles (yes, there is also such an experimental function), including with Russian subtitles.blog.wikimedia.org
On March 18, our friends at the Open Video Alliance launched an important educational project called “
Let's Get Video on Wikipedia ”. The project seeks to motivate more people to create and upload appropriate educational video content to the Wikimedia media repository - to Wikimedia Commons. Video can play an important role in the encyclopedia and other educational resources. Whether it's animal videos, speeches, interviews, excerpts from important films, explaining animation, footage from historical events, or even jointly created documentary films explaining a complex topic - video can enrich our accumulated educational data. Our media storage now has about 4,500 video files, a small number. We do not expect Wikipedia to turn into Wikitube anytime soon, but we hope that thousands of more appropriate educational videos will find their place in articles in our projects.
The Wikimedia Foundation also believes that two things need to be changed for video on the web: get rid of the Flash container used for most videos on the web so developers can create smarter and richer applications could shoot and broadcast video without paying cash fees. That's why we use an open video standard for all of our videos. "Let's get video on Wikipedia how-to" provides simple instructions for converting video into a free and open format and download it. And, of course, all video content on Wikimedia Commons can be reused by anyone for any purpose: we opened all the way.
The campaign is organized jointly with the Mozilla Drumbeat, Wikimedia New York and the Participatory Culture Foundation, creator of the open video player and downloader Miro. It is also a baptism of fire for some new video technologies, over which we work in partnership with Kaltura. In short, it is a demonstration of the power of creating alliances.
If you are shooting a video or are a web developer, we hope that you will join us in supporting open standards and free educational video content. In
a blog post on a Wikipedia volunteer
blog, TheDJ provides some additional information on what is under the hood.
