On May 23, 2007, Valve
announced that the number of active Steam accounts, the world's first digital game distribution service, reached 13 million. Thus, Steam, in which the catalog of more than 150 games from different developers, demos and videos, becomes the leading community of millions of gamers from around the world. Online game activity through Steam is more than 7 billion minutes per month. Since the advent of Steam, over 2,500 updates have been released through it.
Over the years, Steam has gone from being able to automatically update Valve multiplayer games to a platform used by leading publishers and developers to sell their titles. This summer, even more large publishers will announce the transfer of their games to the Valve platform, using it for electronic distribution as well as boxed versions for protection against piracy, ease of searching and viewing servers, marketing campaigns and much more.
"We approached the development of Steam in the same way as we approach the creation of our games: we release something that we checked, get feedback, and implement new functionality on the basis of them," said Gabe Newell, President and co-founder of Valve. “In the case of Steam, we have millions of gamer clients and many client developers and publishers. Over the past year we have added over 100 new games from third-party developers to the catalog, the number of active accounts has reached 13 million, new features have appeared, like Guest Invitations (Guest Passes) and Free Weekends. This growth has given us a lot and inspired us to create many additional functions and services that will be implemented later this year. ”
