Canon wants its own domain zone

The Japanese company Canon has officially announced that it is starting the process of registering the .canon domain zone, in accordance with the new gTLD registration rules.

As you know, since June 2008, the rules for registering new domain zones have been significantly weakened. Previously, to approve an application, it was necessary to prove the social importance and necessity, now it is not necessary.

Having a separate gTLD should make life easier for Canon customers. They will be able to enter standard URLs indicating the specific brand of product and geographic region, for example, a URL of the type ru.a470.canon will immediately lead to Russian-language information about the digital camera Canon A470. It is assumed that this will facilitate the search for information and make it easier to navigate through the Internet.

The Canon application for the domain zone will be reviewed by ICANN in the second half of 2011.
