Cable laying in Egypt with Alcatel

I would like to tell the respected Habr audience the story of laying a single cable across the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt.

Perhaps I'll start with one of my working days. Below in the photo I (employee of HP) and Mohamed (employee of the Egyptian telecommunications company MENA). Viktor Yatsenko photographed us - my colleague. Behind us is the Mediterranean Sea, and we are standing on a concrete block, inside of which there is a connecting equipment. It is here that the cable is connected: the part that is laid in the sea and its other part - from land, from the hub office.

In Egypt today there are 9 cable projects in the Mediterranean and Red Seas, 5 of them are in the process of mounting (according to the words of the engineers of the MENA company). All projects are led by the Egyptian telecommunications company (state, by the way). All key infrastructure facilities are guarded by the military (the building where I worked will also be soon guarded).

The cable, about which I will speak, connects Messina (Italy) and Alexandria (Egypt) directly through the sea. Its length is about 1500 km. Approximate places of connection can be viewed on Yandex maps . Cable laying was carried out by Alcatel back in October-November last year, now its employees are engaged in the configuration of the trunk equipment and are driving various tests. The nodal office of the company MENA is located in the village of Abou Talat near Alexandria, almost at the seashore. Walk to the sea about 5 minutes.

On November 11, work began on connecting the cables, the part that is in the sea and the one on the shore. First, the bunker was laid, the same one that is depicted in the first photo in the post.

Then they began to pull the cable from the ship. It was located ~ 2 km from the coast (here is shallow water). In the sea, the cable just lies at the bottom, but in the coastal zone it is buried to a depth of 1-2 meters. A cable is nothing more than a bundle of 4 (as I understand it) “wires” as thick as a hand. The “wire” itself consists of a fiber that is wrapped in copper (needed for the transfer of electricity to repeaters) and an insulator. All 4 wires are wrapped around a metal cable and it is for a metal cable that the cable is pulled out of the sea in the video below:

The video below already shows the cable itself, it is marked with balls:

Here you can already consider the place of fastening the cable from the ship and the chain with which it was pulled toward the shore:

Then the cable is pulled to the concrete block, where it is later “welded” with the cable, which is on the bank:

The photos below show the cable from the office. In the first photo he will be buried in a ditch.

This photo shows the cable under the building:

The cable is already connected

And this is how it looks on the hardware itself.

Actually that's all. By the way, the Alcatelians themselves also filmed the production of this cable system. Here is their official video. Very interesting, especially the size of repeaters

About the participation of HP in this project, I will try to tell in the next post.
