Many of my colleagues think that active participation in the developer community in the Microsoft stack is simply heating the world space at their own expense. In fact, this is certainly not the case - the advantages of the sea. Therefore, we (
sashaeve and
mezastel ) decided to write about what advantages are present for those who form communities, organize meetings or simply participate in conferences or seminars.
IT Bonus
The first thing to mention is the
IT Bonus program. This program is available to all who work with Microsoft technologies and is ready to share knowledge - whether on a blog, on forums or at meetings. The goal of the program is to encourage active experts with prizes and support from Microsoft.
In the project for each activity points are awarded. There are so many different types of activities with different values, depending on the amount of work done. Here are a few of the activities:
- Writing a technical article (for example, in a personal blog on GotDotNet .
- Webcast preparation - here are considered as screencasts (they can be replicated, for example, on the TechDays portal) as well as podcasts that can be published on rpod.ru and make copies on HabraHabr , GotDotNet and on your personal blog
- Speech or organization speeches local user group
- Implementing a specific Microsoft technology in your company
- Register in the BizSpark program
What prizes can you get on the program? Here are a few of them:
- Keyboard, mouse or webcam from Microsoft. In addition to the usual set of points, at the moment you can get a mouse or a webcam in addition for activity in the user group.
- Microsoft Technology Certification Exam Voucher.
- X-box or laptop
- Partial or full payment for participation in the conference. Typically, these conferences include typical Microsoft events, such as MIX, Platforma, TechEd, and of course PDC. If you have MVP status (more on this below), this also includes MVP CEE OpenDays and MVP Summit.
Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) and Microsoft Regional Director (RD)
MVP and RD programs are designed for experts in Microsoft technologies. It is difficult to get into the ranks, but one of the advantages of this program (besides, for example, a free MSDN subscription) is the huge amount of software that can be obtained for
free only with the status of MVP or RD.
')
Here is a short list of companies that are willing to grant free licenses for their products:
- Microsoft gives all MVP MSDN subscriptions for which all non-gaming software from Microsoft is available.
- JetBrains ReSharper is the # 1 app for any .Net developer.
- Altova - in particular, their product XmlSpy , which is the de facto standard for serious work with XML
- TechSmith - for recording screencasts, Camtasia Studio is the de facto standard.
- Telerik - controls for Asp.Net (in particular MVC), as well as their OpenAccess ORM. Telerik gives access to all its products except SiteFinity CMS.
- Developer Express provides access to its entire product line, from which I want to highlight their controls for WinForms applications.
- The world famous product NCover which is the de facto standard test coverage measurement application.
- Typemock Isolator is the most powerful framework for managing mock objects in the .Net environment. Indispensable for anyone who needs to test SharePoint or legacy code.
Also, MVP and RD receive free access to the following services:
- PluralSight is a subscription to Microsoft technology video training. Records, of course, in English.
- SpeakFlow provides access to the service, which makes presentations more dynamic (in Prezi style).
- TechEd Online is a service with a large number of reports and sessions.
- the opportunity to participate in private FireChats - chat rooms with leading experts from Microsoft, Microsoft Research and other companies and organizations.
- Metro Program - the ability to get the latest builds of Silverlight, Visual Studio, etc.
- Microsoft Connect is a huge community of experts from around the world.
Participation in the User Group
In addition to the standard advantages in the form of obtaining knowledge, sharing experience and receiving promotional products in the form of books, booklets, CDs with tutorials, there are much more weighty advantages.
For example, all well-known world publishers regularly send new books for review.
Among these publishers:
In addition to free books, publishers offer discounts of up to 50% on all their products. They also help to advertise events, and in every possible way help with materials, souvenirs and search for speakers.
Informational (and sometimes material) support of organizations such as:
In addition, UG Leads receive promo kits with video presentations, lectures, presentations, books, posters that can be used at UG meetings. Also can send licenses for Windows 7, Windows 2008 and other programs.
This is not a complete list of all the benefits, but I think it is enough to make it clear why all this is needed.
