Dual-Purpose Torrent

Probably many habraudey have their own round-the-clock torrentokachalkal / home server located on the (mezzanine / in the vestibule / under the table / and here someone tell) and so on.

In this post I want to talk about some unusual, and most importantly a bit more useful placement of the device - in the kitchen:





Once upon a time I had a Pentium II with a 10 gigabyte disk (yes, yes, 10 gigabytes downloaded for two weeks - it happens :)) But somehow the children pierced the matrix in the new Asus EEE PC 900. It’s a pity to sell, replacing the matrix with work - more than half the cost of the very nedonouta - the toad is choking ... It was decided to put

laptop for round-the-clock work, for this were used:



0. Kitchen bedside table (attached extra. Shelf - so that the place for utensils is not decreased - it is important!)

1. Laptop 12k. RUB ASUS EEE PC 900 Black WinXPHome 1Gb 4 + 12Gb SSD Lan + WLan_WebCam

2. New ViewSonic monitor (for only 3500r) with MATO (!) With ... to the matrix. With built-in speakers - there is enough volume.

3. The hard drive (lazily watching the brand) for 160 gigs - I don’t remember where it came from - got like a freebie from a friend’s upgrade. The disk lies on the kitchen sponge - so there is no vibration.



4. IDE-USB Adapter Chinese NONAME - no complaints.

5. Power supply for external hard drive

6. Fan - sometimes stops - but the laptop does not hang.





Of the features / benefits:

1. Installed in the kitchen - the spouse during the shredding / cooking / washing dishes looked at several hundred serial-hours: combining the necessary with pleasant +100500 to the family karma!



2. Far from the bedroom - not audible at all (for me it is critical)

3. Electricity consumption <30 Watt-hour - it becomes critical in comparison with a conventional system unit

4. Cartoons - the bulk of the content of this server - available from all places of the apartment

5. The laptop quietly pulls the average mkv-chi playing while simultaneously downloading torrents and distributing 7 MBytes per second on a samba (any NAS with forest processors go through the forest)



Of the plans for revision:

1. Something needs to be inserted into the SD-connector - what will it stand idle for ...

2. To uproot the webcam (it is in fact USB) - to pull it out of the closet - you can monitor the school from work.

3. Go to Linux (to abandon the Wifi router and hook up the normal radius authentication)

but I have not yet found a solution on Linux (in my opinion, Athero chipsets do not know how to work in promiscous mode, so the access point cannot be made from the laptop.)

4. Go to 2.5 "Winchester - then when the power jumps it (the hard drive) will not fall off

5. Go to the USB-ADSL modem (the notorious DSL-200 or Zyxel) - you can refuse UPS-ki - laptop will take on such a role.

6. Set up video recording of the apartment (several USB cameras through the hub) with sending to working FTP.

UPD: forgot about VESA mount: 400 rubles.

UPD1: I hope for the emergence of howto to create an access point from a laptop to Linux.



For some reason, no one noticed a hanging USB cord: in the evening I plug in a USB flash drive - in the morning when I go to work I forget to take it out with fresh cureit, bases for avir-s and pdf-kami with fresh news resources (at work offline).
